Hey, I'm Joshua Larky, and thanks for stopping by. I created this course because sports fans interested in analytics need an easy and fun way to get started with coding and statistics. I've been coding in R full-time since 2017, and I've done analytics work using R for FTN, PlayerProfiler, Breakout Finder, the San Diego Padres, Southwest Airlines, and the Detroit Tigers. I am the former Director of Analytics for PlayerProfiler, and had a brief stint as the Chief Analytics Officer at FTN Network, before accepting a life-changing role with The 33rd Team.
I hired 20 talented analysts, researchers, and content creators during the Summer of 2022, building out the fantasy and gambling department at The 33rd Team. In this current role, I am learning managerial and company strategy insights from Joe Banner, while also being able to interview former NFL superstars like Chris Johnson, former NFL head coaches like Marty Mornhinweg, and current NFL stars like Amon-Ra St. Brown. My goal is to continue utilizing my analytical skill set to create engaging and actionable NFL betting and fantasy football content. My weekly work is a mixture of coding/analytics, podcasting, researching, writing, people management, department strategy, and social media. I am incredibly fortunate to have this role, and the catalyst for my sports career was learning to code (seriously).
I learned R when getting my Master of Science in Business Analytics from the University of Texas at Austin. Even when learning in a formal classroom setting from a highly rated Masters program, I found it difficult to grasp many of the coding concepts taught each day. I had little domain knowledge/interest in stocks, apartment rent, and credit card fraud, so it was difficult for me to develop my analytical intuition with those datasets. Outside of class, I spent countless hours playing around with any sports data I could find, reinforcing the concepts with numbers that jumped off the screen for me.
I attended the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in February 2018 , and randomly happened to sit next to Matt Kelley, the brains behind PlayerProfiler.com. At the time, I didn't know I was talking to one of the top minds in the fantasy football analytics space, and he definitely didn't know who I was (sweaty grad student who grew up in San Diego and hates wearing long-sleeve button downs). But from that chance meeting, a working relationship and friendship were formed. And this is my official "how I entered the industry" story.
Thankfully for you, I stopped my education after graduating with my Masters, which keeps the course price low. While you could hand over $10,000s to a university to learn analytics from a 60-year-old with a monotone voice and a PhD who made his money in oil or banking, for a tiny fraction of that price ($125-$500), you can learn R in a fun and efficient way from someone with hands-on experience in a variety of business analytics and sports analytics settings. I am confident that while this course is incredibly fun and addictive, the actual code and content that you'll be learning is easily transferrable across industries.
